Matthew Watkins was born in Manchester, England, and raised in Toronto, Canada, where he graduated with a degree in Communication and Design from the Ontario College of Art. He has lived and worked in Italy for many years.
A versatile multidisciplinary creator, Watkins works at the intersection of drawing, storytelling and digital technology. His practice spans fine art, animation, editorial illustration and creative consulting across commercial, cultural and experimental contexts. Alongside his studio practice, he is a university lecturer and a regular contributor to ESTRO, the magazine of Park Hyatt Milano.
Watkins first gained international recognition as an early pioneer of mobile digital art, attracting attention for his expressive, finger-painted digital works, with subjects ranging from noir and political satire to vivid fantasy worlds. His exhibitions and live performances have been featured on television networks in Italy, Korea and Argentina, as well as in major publications including The Washington Post, The Daily Telegraph, Wired and GQ. His work has also appeared on influential digital culture platforms including Cult of Mac.
